A Step Back into 1850s Albemarle
This week’s Wandering Wednesday took us on a journey through time to one of Albemarle’s most cherished historic homes. Nestled in the heart of downtown, this charming structure dates all the way back to the early 1850s. Over the decades, it has seen many chapters—changing owners, roles, and even its very purpose.
One of the most fascinating details?
Clue: At one point in its life, this home was used as a law office! That’s right—its walls once echoed with legal discussions instead of dinner conversations.
While it may have had many owners throughout the years, one particularly notable chapter began in 1873, when it was purchased by a man who would later become the sheriff of Stanly County. Imagine the history this house has witnessed!

Today, the Isaiah & Ellen Snuggs House is preserved by the Stanly County Historical Society, who have worked tirelessly to ensure this landmark continues to educate and inspire. It stands as a beautiful reminder of the architecture and stories that shaped early Albemarle.
In 1873, the home was purchased by a man who would go on to become the sheriff of Stanly County. While its walls have seen many owners, each chapter adds another layer to the story of our town—and this one is no exception.
