City Invites Artists to Submit Proposals for Grant-Funded Mural Project in Courthouse Plaza

The City of Albemarle is inviting professional artists to submit proposals for a grant funded mural project in downtown Albemarle’s Courthouse Plaza.
Located in a former alleyway stretching from West Main Street to King Avenue, Courthouse Plaza has been transformed into a pedestrian-friendly gathering space. Since its opening, the plaza has become a venue for community events such as festivals, themed games, art walks, seasonal celebrations, and more.
The new mural will be installed on the east-facing brick wall at 119 W Main Street, a prominent location within the plaza that offers high visibility to both pedestrians and drivers on Main Street.
“This mural represents a meaningful investment in the continued growth and vitality of our downtown,” said Katie Lynn, Main Street Manager. “By adding a large-scale work of public art to Courthouse Plaza, we are not only enhancing a space that has already seen significant improvements, but also creating a destination that will draw visitors, support local businesses, and instill pride in our community.”
The City is seeking proposals from muralists to create a visually compelling and memorable piece that reflects Albemarle’s identity, promotes arts and culture, and contributes to the beautification of the downtown area. The selected artist will receive a commission of up to $35,000, which includes all associated costs such as travel, materials, surface preparation, and insurance.
Artists must submit a complete proposal package, including a written narrative, sketches, materials list, maintenance plan, and examples of past work. Up to three semi-finalists will be selected and awarded a $500 stipend to further develop their concepts. The final artist will be chosen by a diverse seven-member selection committee representing the arts, local government, and the community.
This opportunity is open to professional artists, with strong encouragement for North Carolina artists to apply. The deadline for submissions is October 17, 2025.
