Liberty Garden

The tragic events of September 11, 2001, forever changed the hearts and minds of people around the world. Terrorists sought to destroy the peace of our great nation. However, they were not successful in their attempts. What they did, instead, was produce within us a nation that is stonger and more united from the ashes of tragedy.

As a result of that fateful day, Keep America Beautiful, Inc. made a plea to its affiliates, and others, to join them in creating a special place of natural beauty to honor the memories of those who perished on that day. For that reason, Albemarle Downtown Development Corporation formed a special committee to develop a memorial park in Downtown Albemarle called Liberty Garden.

The purpose of the garden is to offer everyone the opportunity to honor or memorialize loved ones and friends through a brick paver, bench or lamp post with their names inscribed on them.

The entrance to the Liberty Garden, located at West Main and Depot Street, is specifically designated as a Public Plaza. It is filled with spaces personally inscribed, with brick pavers previously purchased by the general public. Benches and lamp posts have also been purchased.

At the rear of the garden, three separate sections are designated for Military Veterans, Law Enforcement and Fire & EMS personnel. The Veterans' Plaza offers the opportunity for any branch of military veterans, dating back to the Revolutionary War, to have a brick paver, bench or lamp post placed in their honor or memory. It is not restricted to veterans residing in Stanly County, but is for veterans everywhere.

In addition, the Law Enforcement and Fire & EMS Plazas consists of bricks, benches and lamp posts purchased in honor or memory of those in these services.
